Itinerary

1
Stop 1
Drive along a 21-mile (34 km) barrier island off the mainland of Morehead City, NC. The island, separated from the mainland by Bogue Sound, runs east to west, with the ocean beaches facing due south. It is a beautiful drive with sparkling waters and suggested possible stops to pick up a quick snack or drink and view the beautiful Atlantic Ocean or Bogue Sound.
2
Stop 2
Next stop is Fort Macon State Park. Fort Macon State Park is on Bogue Banks in Atlantic Beach, the park opened in 1936. It is a great place to wander around and view the cannons, barracks and many historic artifacts. Visit the museum and take a hike on the scenic nature trails overlooking the ocean or the sound.
3
Stop 3
The tour of the Crystal Coast continues across the bridge onto the mainland to the majestic downtown area of the Morehead City waterfront. The waterfront projects phenomenal views of the open water. It is a perfect destination for a fresh out-of-the-water snack or lunch. Visitors to the waterfront will also be rewarded with a wide selection of galleries, boutiques, and acclaimed local restaurants, including the legendary Sanitary Fish Market and Restaurant, Jack’s waterfront bar and many others. Don’t forget a quick stop at the famous Big Rock Fishing Tournament headquarters.
4
Stop 4
Our next stop is the quaint Beaufort waterfront. You can walk the boardwalk and visit friendly shops, the Maritime Museum and check out the rich history of the famous Blackbeard pirate. Beaufort possesses an old-world, southern charm, steeped in maritime history and the adventure brought by its proximity to the Atlantic Ocean. With world-class fishing, it’s a popular spot for mariners. North Carolina's Crystal Coast is famous for its local seafood. Beaufort is no exception. Hopefully, you can catch a quick glimpse of the wild Shackelford Banks ponies.
5
Stop 5
The last segment of the tour is a scenic drive to the authentic “Down East”. You will experience beautiful views as you cross the bridge onto Harkers Island. There will be time for a quick visit to the Core Sound Waterfowl Museum and on a clear day, you will be able to see our “Diamond Lady” Lighthouse. You will see why this is a destination for for many.
