If you’re interested in discovering the artistic essence of Mexico, step with me into a guided journey where architecture, history, and social transformation intertwine.

I’m Edgar, certified local guide and I invite you to explore Mexico’s own Gilded Age: the Porfiriato. Together, we’ll walk through opulent mansions, grand palaces, and emblematic landmarks that still preserve the elegance, European eclecticism, and ambition of a dictator.

We’ll revisit the final years of a 19th-century regime built on progress and inequality, and trace how those tensions gave rise to a new artistic and architectural identity and helped ignite one of the most influential artistic movements of the 20th century: Mexican Muralism.

This is more than a historical walk — it is a journey to understand the aesthetic transformation of Mexico in the 20th century: from dictatorship to cultural renaissance.

Itinerary

Stop 1

Admire with me one of Diego Rivera's most important murals, which portrays Mexican society with characters from the Spanish conquest to the 19th century.

Stop 2

Lets walk through one of the oldest parks in the Americas to learn about Mexican society, paying attention to some of the old mansions of the richest people of the time.

Stop 3

We'll walk around the lobby of the Palace of Fine Arts, an emblematic theater of the Porfiriato period, which encapsulates in its architecture the social tensions surrounding the industrial development of Mexico and the social issues of the time.

Stop 4

We'll appreciate the splendor of the Mexican Gilded Age in one of the most beautiful venues in the city, a space where luxury was not designed for private enjoyment but for the Mexican public postal service. Let's walk around the entrance and lobby of this fabulous building of the Mexican Gilded Age.

Stop 5

Come visit and enjoy one of the oldest Mexican candy shops in the city, which has the original decorations from its opening in 1874.
